The UNM Latin American and Iberian Institute (LAII) has awarded fellowships to four Anthropology students: James Davenport (Archaeology), Asia Alsgaard (Archaeology), Milena Carvalo (Archaeology) and Zsofia Szoke (Ethnology)more Archaeology graduate students Lindsay Shepard, Lexi O'Donnell and Genevieve Woodhead encounter a "small site" during survey at Chaco Canyon while conducting research with Dr. Angelyn Bass, Research Assistant Professor of Anthropology at UNM, and her project colleagues, Douglas Porter (School of Engineering, University of Vermont) and Larry Nordby (Archaeologist), have been selected to receive a 2018 Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Award for their work on National Park Service archaeological site conservation projects at Montezuma Castle and Casa Grande Ruins National Monuments.
On a biennial basis (every odd year) the SMA Dissertation Award is given to the author of a dissertation which is judged to be a significant and potentially influential contribution to medical anthropology.
Dissertations are judged on the basis of: (1) scope and excellence of scholarship, including ethnographic research; (2) originality of subject matter; (3) effectiveness and persuasiveness of arguments; and (4) writing quality.
Established in 1950, the Alfred Vincent Kidder Award for Eminence in the Field of American Archaeology was initially given every three years to an outstanding archaeologist specializing in the archaeology of the Americas.

The award has been given alternately to specialists in Mesoamerican archaeology and the archaeology of the Southwestern region — areas that were both central to the pioneering and exemplary work of A. more Professor Keith Prufer contributed to a large international collaboration linking Early Holocene human DNA in Belize to earliest populations in North and South America. Prufer has been conducting excavations in remote rocksheters in the Bladen Nature Reserve in Belize seeking clues about the first humans to live in the American tropics.
Submissions: In order to be a candidate for the SMA Dissertation award, students need not have received their Ph D degrees in a department of anthropology, nor in a North American university.
Students should submit a PDF of their final, defended and accepted dissertation, accompanied by two letters of nomination: one from the student’s advisor and the other from a dissertation committee member (or comparable faculty member familiar with the work).
These letters must state why the dissertation contributes to the field of medical anthropology.
The candidate’s dissertation advisor should attest that the submitted dissertation is the version accepted by the dissertation committee.
