There is no hard deadline by when these steps must be completed; however, students are recommended to enter the thesis track as soon as possible after enrolling in the MS program.
The ME Department requires that students who plan to write a thesis have at least three committee members, including the faculty supervisor who serves as Committee Chair. The Committee Chair must be from the Mechanical Engineering Department core faculty.
The Department further requires that at least one committee member be core Mechanical Engineering faculty. thesis committees must include at least two core Mechanical Engineering faculty.
Alternatively, non-core faculty may act as Committee Chair, but in that case, the remaining members of the thesis committee must include at least two core faculty members. The thesis proposal should be submitted by the student, to the ME Graduate Adviser, as soon as possible after the student identifies their supervisor and before the student may begin registering for thesis credits (ME 700).

Thesis requirements apply to all students in the thesis option, including part-time and online students.Students in the thesis option need to register for a total of 12 thesis credits: ME 700.To formally opt into the thesis track, students must complete the following three steps.It bridges the gap between the MSc and MEng (course-based) programs, allowing students to complete a minimum of 6 courses and maximum 8 courses, of which no more than two courses can be senior undergraduate. The program has both part-time and full-time options.Please note that courses are often not scheduled for evenings/weekends.Students who excel in the SE MS program are encouraged to apply to the SE post-MS Ph D program.Admission information, including an online application, can be found on the College of Engineering Graduate Programs website for Prospective Graduate Students.Students in the thesis-based MEng are typically first admitted to the MEng course-based program.Students may choose to work with a faculty member to create a mini research project in place of the final four courses they would otherwise need to complete the MEng course-based program.The Engineering Practice option is available to all College of Engineering graduate students, including international students.For more information, contact the ENG Graduate Programs Office.
