A medical school that requests an essay with a 1000 word limit is asking you to write in detail about whatever is being asked.

In contrast, essays with shorter limits, such as 50 – 100 words, are asking for brevity.

Secondary applications arrive fast and furious soon after the primary AMCAS application is transmitted to the medical schools.

It’s important to return secondary applications quickly since an application is not considered complete until the secondary has been received.

Secondary essays are sent out after a medical school receives your primary application.

For AMCAS schools, the earliest you may receive a secondary application is the last week of June.

While some “optional” questions discourage applicants from responding unless they truly have new information to add to the application, most others are not optional.

If you fail to answer an optional question it may appear that you’re not making enough of an effort to advance your case with that particular medical school or that you’re not fully interested in that school, which is not the impression you want to leave with a medical school.

The prompts and lengths for these essays varies from medical school to medical school.

For example, one medical school might require four shorter essays of 50 words each while another might ask for three 1000 word essays.
