Many courses are hybrid (between classroom and online) or “use interactive learning with videos and review questions”; the new classrooms in the science building “are so advanced, they’re perfect for modern learning,” and there are “many opportunities for research, community service, or campus organizations.” The UK Core class system is a “great strength,” which sets general education requirements for every student “regardless of major.” Additionally, “all faculty are engaged in research so there are many opportunities for students in that area."UK professors are “extremely dedicated to what they teach” and “passionate about giving us more than just degrees,” with “a great base of knowledge, enthusiasm, and accessibility.” Faculty “seem to be obviously experts in their field” and “are able to answer questions from personal experience more so than just textbook knowledge.” Though students admit that higher-level classes far exceed the introductory ones (“due to large lecture style courses it is difficult to get detailed feedback from some”), the curriculum is overall “rigorous and challenging,” and the student body “is unified by a central respect for the image of the college and a general interest in professional development.” The university has “made great strides to become more diverse and inclusive for all students,” while at the same time transforming itself into “a more modern and thriving university city.”This being the genteel south, everyone is “very easygoing,” and there is a “comfortable atmosphere” in which “everyone gets along and does their own thing.” There are over 450 student organizations that allow people to really “develop the community and experience that they want, specifically tailored to their interests.” Most of the students are white and from Kentucky or neighboring states, and “there is a mix of students from different backgrounds and ideologies.” Southern hospitality is the norm here, and everyone is “very friendly and very willing to help each other.” The overarching theme of the university is “the community that UK facilitates.” “It truly is a culture to be part of big blue nation,” says one student.
One of the gelling agents is the “amazing basketball team,” so sporting events (including football and baseball) are understandably always popular, and since campus is close to downtown Lexington, “people will go out to eat or attend events happening there.” This is “horse country,” which happens to be “in a wonderful proximity to good hiking, so a lot of time is spent outdoors.” Many people work out at the university gym, and movies and video games take up a college-appropriate amount of time.
